I tend to get into bands and listen to them rather heavily for a while. Currently, I am listening to a lot of Mato Nanji and his band Indigenous. This guy sounds like SRV but definitely has a sound of his own. Within this blues/rock genre I have also been listening to Tinsley Ellis.
Before Indegenous, I was listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers. Stadium Acardium is a classic album.
The reggae/jazz/ska grooves of the little known Puerto Rican band Cultura Profetica filled my cd changer for a while. Other reggae artists that I listen to is Majek Fashek and Alpha Blondy. Matisyahu is also pretty cool.
I've also gone through a few phases where I couldn't listen to enough of some bands that became labeled as jam bands, --Widespread Panic, Allman Brothers, and of course the Grateful Dead. I also listened to a bunch of John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Those guys were the kings of improvisation.
When it comes to straight-ahead rock, I plug in some Pat Travers. He is probably the only artist that I listened to when I was 12 that I still listen to today. PT Rocks!
Oh, and the Gipsy Kings are cool too.
