Just got my host acct and screwed up already.

I was with another cPanel host that went down that I luckily had site backups from.
I was under the impression that these backups (Home and Database) could be used to transport your site from one cPanel host to another if need be.

I tried uploading my Home directory and I am now getting a 403 Forbidden when I try to access my URL.

Is there any additional information I need to post in order to assist a support member??

Edit: It was about 50 someodd megs for the home directory file and it's showing up in my Disk Space Usage as being there. File Manager doesn't indicate that my files are actually there though.
Edit2: Eek, it looks like I was definitely wrong with that. Looking around, I must have changed the whole home directory of Cpanel and some files I'm looking at I can't guess the default parameters to. Maybe I should have downloaded a new backup first in case I screwed something up.

Next time I'll try an alternate method to get my site and content back up. Thing is, some needed files for my site are in the Joomla directories and I'd need some way to back up maybe just the Joomla files (which were installed in the root directory so there'd be no clicking to go to another directory for the Joomla CMS).

Would really appreciate some help as soon as possible, even if it just means resetting the account so I can start over. Thanks again.

I moved your homedir files to the correct location but you will have to create a new database, create a user, and then assign the user permissions to the database. After that you need to import your old databse ;)

I see my stuff properly in public_html now but I still get that 403 Forbidden when I visit my web address.

Looking around Cpanel I see remnants in some files in other folders in the home directory (above the public_html and public_ftp folders) of my old host in there. I don't know if that's causing the 403 or what.

... That was a pretty bad explanation wasn't it.

I don't know if I did anything to the .htaccess or what because whenever I've had a 403 problem it was always because something went awry with .htaccess.
EDIT: Nevermind that last bit, i'm thinking of Internal Server Error 500.

Did that backup come from a .tar.gz file or do you just have it in all those folders?

The backup was generated by cPanel X on my old host which was a .tar.gz, yes. That's what I uploaded.
I then uploaded the database and that looks like it's OK. I ran checks on it.

But I think the home directory upload screwed everything up. Are those only made to go onto the same host and not between hosts?

On second look, that upload should have only been 18 megs and it's showing up that 56mb are used up. I know I didn't upload the wrong thing, I do have an old zip of my old site before I switched to using Joomla! but I don't want that on there.

Maybe it would be better if the account was reset to default and I can try something else to get the stuff up. I would like to keep the root directory stuff (all the folders that should be in the public_html) and then I can upload the database that holds the content. I don't want to lose the logos and things that are in the root directory (Joomla! installation) by doing a fresh install of Joomla. It has a couple customizations as well that I'm not willing to lose.
I've just got the feeling that the thing modified something major either in cPanel or in my account and I don't know how to trace it.

OK... I'll try, but I'm convinced it's not gonna fix anything. It's the Home Directory backup.

Edit: I did that again and now things are working, the default index.html is there as well as joomla's index.php.
Edit2: Wait, did you mean to just upload the .tar.gz into the account instead of restoring it? D'OH!

All the backups I have there are up.
I'm trying to get Joomla to connect to the database server but I don't know where in any config files to put in the mysql username and password. I'm going to try to install Joomla in another folder and have it connect to the sql database.

EDIT: Got that second installation to work by associating it with a blank database with proper user information, deleting the new one, and restoring the backup Joomla database - all data loaded properly.
Now I just have to dig around the root installation and find where the MySQL details are stowed away. As soon as I can do that, everything will be back to normal.

Yeah, the problem is I'm clueless as to where to find that information. It looks like there's something in the config that's very nondescript as to what it's for, there's some sort of user in there with the database name, a couple different passwords that look like they're in Hexadecimal... I have no idea what to do in order to keep all my stuff but make the thing connect to the database.

Maybe copy and paste some of the settings from the one config to the other and see what happens..

BAM! I'm up. Just need to double check everything and then I think I'm good.
Gotta have to start working on my enhancements now with bridging phpBB if I can do that. That's the part where I consult with some other Joomla! people.

Thanks for the help Corey. I pretty much know what I'm doing, just needed some help on that backend stuff I thought I messed up with the backup.

I'm wondering what those extra 20 or so megs are that are taking up stuff though. What's the WWW folder for - is it needed or did that get popped in there when I restored the HomeDir because it's got those folders in there. Is it safe to get rid of that to free up the space assuming it's not being used???

Uh oh. I deleted Joomla's configuration somehow when I was getting rid of the placeholder html. That's not un-doable is it...

Edit: I've given my Contact Us form a try and it goes to a blank page. I think it's set to use php mail or whatever that is - is that enabled?? I was hoping that would work.

On PHP intermediate which you have, mail is enabled. Don't delete the www, tmp, etc, public_html folders. You need all of them.
